Fix
Watch winder not turning: fixes
Published
Short answer
Most winders that seem broken are actually paused, unpowered or in a rest cycle. Check the adapter and outlet, fresh batteries, the on and off switch and the program setting first. Many winders rest for hours between cycles or stop when the lid opens. If it still will not turn after a full cycle, try freeing the cushion and drum, then contact the maker about the motor under warranty.

A watch winder that sits still looks broken, but it often is not. Winders are programmed to rotate only part of the day, many stop when you open them, and battery powered models slow down long before they stop. This page is for owners whose winder has stopped turning, or whose watch keeps running down on it. It walks through the checks in order, from the free and obvious ones to the motor, and explains when a repair makes sense and when warranty or replacement is the better route.
Is it really broken? Rest cycles and programs
Winders do not spin all day. To give the turns per day you choose, most rotate for a few minutes, pause, and repeat, and many add a long rest. Barrington's single winder listing, for example, describes running intermittently over 12 hours and resting for 12 hours. Orbita lists winding cycles of 8 or 12 minutes. If you watch a winder for a minute and see nothing, it may simply be paused.
Before anything else, check the mode. Turn it off and on again, then select a program and watch closely for 10 to 15 minutes. Many winders run a short cycle right after being switched on, which makes a quick test easy. Check the manual for how your model starts a cycle.
Common causes at a glance
| Cause | Sign | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Rest cycle or pause | No movement for a while, then it moves | Wait through a full cycle or restart the program |
| Power adapter or outlet | No lights, no sound | Check the plug, outlet and adapter connection; try another outlet |
| Weak batteries | Slow or no rotation, works on mains | Fit fresh batteries of the type listed |
| Lid or door sensor | Stops when opened, resumes when closed | Close the lid fully; clean or align the sensor area |
| Wrong setting | Lights on, rarely turns | Set direction and TPD again from the manual |
| Cushion or drum jammed | Motor hums, drum does not move | Remove the cushion, check for obstruction, reseat it |
| Overloaded drum | Turns slowly or stalls with a heavy watch | Check the watch is within the winder's size and weight range |
| Failed motor or board | No response after all checks | Warranty claim or maker repair |
Step by step checks
- 1
Remove the watch and set it aside safely.
- 2
Check the power: make sure the adapter is pushed fully into the winder and the wall, and try a different outlet. Some adapters have a light; if it is off, the adapter may have failed.
- 3
If the winder runs on batteries, fit a fresh set. Heiden's dual power models, for example, take 2 D size batteries or an AC adapter, with battery life listed at 1 to 3 months depending on the setting.
- 4
Switch the winder off, wait a few seconds, and switch it on again. Confirm the on and off switch is in the on position.
- 5
Select a program again: direction and TPD. On models with an LCD, check that the correct position is selected.
- 6
Close the lid or door fully. Some winders, such as a DUKWIN model in the listings, pause all rotors and return them to the 12 o'clock position when the box is opened.
- 7
Watch for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the first cycle should start according to the manual.
- 8
If you hear the motor but the drum does not move, remove the cushion and check for anything blocking the drum. Reseat the cushion so it clips in securely.
- 9
Test again without the watch. If it turns empty but stalls with the watch, the watch may be too heavy or the cushion too tight.
Note.Unplug the winder before opening any panel. Do not open the motor housing on a winder still under warranty, since that usually voids it.
When the watch stops even though the winder turns
Sometimes the winder works and the watch still stops. That usually points to settings or the watch itself. Check the rotation direction first: some movements wind in one direction only, and a winder set to the wrong direction will spin all day without winding the watch. Bidirectional is the safe default when you do not know.
Next, check TPD. If it is set too low for the movement, the watch can slowly run down. Raise it one step and test for a few days. Our watch winder TPD settings guide covers how to find the right values.
If the watch stops even after being wound fully by hand and worn, the problem is the watch, not the winder. See automatic watch keeps stopping and how to start a stopped automatic watch.
Repair, warranty or replace
If none of the checks work, the motor, gearbox or control board has likely failed. Check your warranty first. Listings we track show a range: Heiden and Rothwell list 12 months, and Orbita lists a 2 year manufacturer warranty. Contact the maker with your proof of purchase and a short description of what you checked.
Out of warranty, a repair depends on the brand. Higher end makers often service their winders or sell replacement modules. On inexpensive winders, a failed motor can cost close to the price of a new unit, so replacement is often the practical choice. When you replace, look for adjustable TPD and direction, a quiet motor and a reliable power supply. Our best watch winders and best single watch winders guides compare current models.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my watch winder stop and start? That is normal. Winders rotate in cycles with pauses and rest periods to reach the turns per day you set, rather than spinning constantly.
Why is my watch winder making noise but not turning? The motor is running but the drum is blocked, the cushion is caught, or the gearbox has slipped. Remove the cushion and check for obstructions before assuming a motor fault.
How long do watch winder batteries last? It depends on the model and setting. One brand's listing gives 1 to 3 months on 2 D cells. Use the mains adapter if your winder includes one.
Can I fix a watch winder myself? You can do every check in this guide. Opening the motor housing or replacing a motor is possible on some models, but it can void the warranty, so contact the maker first.
