Tissot PRX vs Seiko Presage

Published

This page is for buyers choosing a first serious automatic between about $400 and $900 who have narrowed it to a Tissot PRX or a Seiko Presage. The two look nothing alike: one is an integrated-bracelet sport watch, the other a dress watch built around its dial. We compare the PRX in 40 mm and 35 mm against the Presage SSA459 and SRP841, using only listing facts, and we flag the gaps, such as Presage case sizes that the listings do not give.

Two different ideas of a nice watch

The Tissot PRX is a 1970s-style sport watch with a steel case that flows into an integrated bracelet. Both PRX listings here describe 316L stainless steel, an index dial with date and an interchangeable bracelet with a butterfly clasp. Our is the Tissot PRX worth it page covers the model in depth.

The Seiko Presage Cocktail Time models are built around their dials. The SSA459 listing describes a patterned green dial with a gloss finish inspired by a cocktail, on a brown leather strap. The SRP841 listing describes an ice blue pressed-pattern dial on a steel bracelet with a see-through caseback.

Spec table: PRX 40, PRX 35, SSA459 and SRP841

All facts below come from the Amazon listings. Where a listing does not state a detail, the table says so.

Note. The Tissot listings say the 100 m rating suits short recreational swimming and showering but not diving or snorkeling. The Presage listings do not give case diameter or thickness, so check Seiko's spec sheet for fit.

Movement and power reserve

The PRX 35 mm listing names the Swiss Powermatic 80, Tissot's automatic caliber whose name refers to its 80-hour power reserve. The PRX 40 mm listing only says Swiss automatic, so confirm the caliber on the specific reference you buy. Read what is Tissot Powermatic 80 for the background.

Both Presage listings state a 41-hour reserve. The SSA459 adds a power reserve indicator and manual winding on its 4R57. A 41-hour watch will often stop after a day and a night off the wrist, while an 80-hour movement can usually sit through a weekend. See power reserve explained.

Wearability, size and water

Both PRX listings give a 10.93 mm thickness, which keeps the watch slim for a sport model, and you can choose 40 mm or 35 mm. The integrated bracelet gives a distinctive look but limits strap swaps compared with standard lugs; see Tissot PRX sizes for help choosing between the two.

At 100 m, the PRX handles swimming in the way its listing describes. The Presage models list 50 m, which is generally fine for splashes and handwashing but makes them less suited to pool days. Our Tissot PRX water resistance page and water resistance ratings explain the numbers.

Style and where you will wear it

The PRX works with jeans, a T-shirt or a jacket, and its steel bracelet makes it a one-watch option for many people. It does not change much by occasion, which is part of its appeal.

The Presage is at its best with a shirt or at dinner. The SSA459 on leather leans formal, while the SRP841 on a bracelet is easier to wear daily. If dial texture is what draws you in, the Presage gives you that for roughly half the PRX price. Compare more models in our Seiko Presage guide and Tissot automatic guide.

Value and long-term ownership

At listed prices, the PRX costs about $350 to $450 more than these Presage models. For that you get a Swiss movement, a longer stated reserve on the Powermatic 80 version and twice the water resistance. The Presage puts its money into the dial instead. Both are mechanical automatics that will need periodic service; see how often to service an automatic. If you are also considering a cheaper dress option, read Tissot PRX vs Orient Bambino.
